THE URGENCY OF THE MISSION

God is at work in the world and He wants us to join Him. This assignment is given by our Lord Jesus, when He says “Go ye therefore”. We called it “The Great Commission”. This is different from individual ministry. My ministry is my service to believers in the body of Christ while my mission is my service to unbelievers in the world. God created me for both.

 

Jesus clearly understood his mission on earth. At age 12 he said “I must be about my father’s business” and at age 33 when he was dying on the cross, he said “It is finished”. These two statements showed that he had completed the mission the father gave Him. The mission that Jesus had while on earth is now our mission since we are the body of Christ. What he did in his physical body we are to continue as his spiritual body (the Church). What is that mission?

1.     Introducing people to God.

2.     Reconciling people to God through Jesus Christ.

3.     To make man be part of God’s family.

4.     To become like Christ.

5.     To serve Him.

6.     To tell others about Christ

Questions:

1.     In Matthew 28:18 – Jesus said all authority is given unto me. In verse 19 – He said “Go ye therefore. Who are the people Jesus addressing here? The multitude or the eleven? Or the Pastor? – Matthew 28:16.

2.     Why didn’t he send the multitude?

3.     What is the purpose of the mission?

4.     Jesus secures our salvation, put us in his family, gives us his spirit and then makes us his agents in the world. Explain the phase “We are workers together with God”?

5.     Mission is the greatest thing you can do for someone: If your neighbour had cancer or AIDS and you knew the cure, it would be a great criminal to withhold that lifesaving information. So it would be worse to keep secret the way to: (1) forgiveness (2) purpose (3) peace and (4) eternal life. Is there any benefit in doing the work of mission to others?

Possible answer:

·        Eternal destiny of others

·        The consequences of mission will last till eternity.

·        Nothing else I do will ever matter as much as helping people establish an eternal relationship with God.

·        Mission has eternal significance.

6.     Mission gives life meaning: The best use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it. The truth is that, only the kingdom of God is going to last. Every other thing will eventually vanish knowing this truth, why do we give other things a priority?

7.     Mission brings glory to God: On the night of crucifixions, Jesus said “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do”.   In what mode of thought can this statement of Jesus comes out of our month?

8.     God blesses the life dedicated to His kingdom: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness all other things shall be added unto you” said Jesus. The secret of being blessed by God is to participate in his agenda for the world – to be a part of what he is accomplishing on earth. Why do missionary surfer affliction while performing the work of mission?
