Following the Shepherd's Voice: Wisdom from John 10

Image
*_Following the Shepherd's Voice: Wisdom from John 10_* John 10:2-5 *But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.* Jesus uses the analogy of a shepherd and his sheep to illustrate an intimate relationship between Him and His followers. This passage reveals profound insights into the shepherd-sheep relationship. The shepherd's role is important: He knows each sheep by name, leading them out and guiding them along safe paths. He goes before them, ensuring their safety and preparing the way. The sheep are intimately connected to their shepherd, recognizing his voice, and following him because they trust and know him. This relationsh...

Should I Get A Divorce

Image
*_SHOULD I GET A DIVORCE?_* Does it feel like your marriage is over? Have one of you mentioned divorce during an argument? Are you wondering when it’s time? Even during these tough times, you’re not alone. The Bible, which is God’s own words to us, and Jesus, who loves us more than anyone else, can provide guidance and comfort. They can help show you the path forward and give you hope when it all seems hopeless. *_Marriage Is Special_* Marriage is unique because it’s about a man and a woman coming together as one and this is what makes it different from all other relationships. Jesus described it when He was asked about divorce. He said, “This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together” (Matthew 19:6). What this means is that your marriage is more than just a promise between you and your partner; it’s a commitment between you, ...

Unveiling the Riches of Christ

Image
Unveiling the Riches of Christ_* The more we immerse ourselves in God's Word, the richer we become in Christ. It's a transformative process where the principles of Scripture gradually infiltrate our minds, shaping our behavior, and leading us to a deeper understanding of the Christian life. Psalm 119:11 lays the foundation for this transformative journey: *"Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You."* Studying Scripture is not merely an academic exercise; it is a safeguard against straying from God's path. The Word becomes a shield, guiding our steps and preventing us from stumbling. Romans 12:2 further illuminates this process: *"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."* The renewal of our minds through Scripture is so important; it empowers us to discern God's will and align our lives with His pe...

Following Christ Above All Else

Image
*_Following Christ Above All Else_* In Matthew 8:21-22, Jesus encounters a scribe who expresses his desire to follow Him but with a condition. He says, *"Lord, let me first go and bury my father."* To which Jesus responds, *"Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead."** This interaction illustrates a crucial lesson about commitment. The scribe was hesitant, possibly using the duty of burying his father as an excuse to delay following Jesus. Jesus, in His wisdom, saw beyond the surface and recognized the lack of genuine commitment in the scribe's response. Have you ever delayed your commitment to Christ because of obligations or expectations from family or cultural norms? Are there situations where you hold back from fully surrendering to Jesus due to fear of familial disapproval? Jesus' response highlights the priority of following Him above all else. It's not that Jesus is dismissing the importance of honoring one's parents or fulfilling res...

I Surrender All - Giving Up The Fight With God To Gain The Peace Of God

Image
*I Surrender All –* _Giving Up The Fight With God To Gain The Peace Of God_  WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FULLY SURRENDER TO GOD? Let me begin by using a powerful illustration that can serve as a metaphor for us.  There was an officer in the navy who had always dreamed of commanding a battleship. He finally achieved that dream and was given commission of the newest and proudest ship in the fleet. One stormy night, as the ship plowed through the seas, the captain was on duty on the bridge when off to the port he spotted a strange light rapidly closing with his own vessel. Immediately he ordered the signalman to flash the message to the unidentified craft, “Alter your course ten degrees to the south.”  Only a moment had passed before the reply came: “Alter your course ten degrees to the north.” Determined that his ship would take a backseat to no other, the captain snapped out the order to be sent: “Alter course ten degrees–I am the CAPTAIN!” The response beamed back, “Alter...

What To Do When You Want To Give Up

Image
*_WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WANT TO GIVE UP_* Maybe you’ve heard about the semicolon tattoos people are getting. Whether they’re doing it for themselves or as a reminder to others, the point is to bring hope to those wrestling with depression, suicidal thoughts and self-harm. Why rally around a punctuation mark? In writing, a semicolon is a decision the author makes to continue on, to hold off ending the sentence. Think of it as a symbol of perseverance—a choice to keep going. A reminder that tells them what to do when they want to give up. Thousands of people are on the brink of giving up on life every day. They feel like they don’t have a reason to keep going. Are you one of them? It would be so easy to quit, wouldn’t it? To no longer face the struggles of this world? Here’s the problem: giving up puts the period on the sentence of your life. And just like that, it’s over. No re-do, no second chances, nothing to hope for. What if there’s more to your life? What if you could overcome ...

The Pursuit of Happiness: A Spiritual Perspective

Image
*_The Pursuit of Happiness: A Spiritual Perspective_* Happiness, that elusive feeling many spend their lives pursuing, often seems to slip through our fingers just as we believe we've grasped it. King Solomon, in his wisdom and wealth, declared in Ecclesiastes that he found most things in life to be meaningless and void of joy. So often, we seek happiness in the people and things around us, especially in our relationships. We enter marriage or friendships believing they will bring us happiness, only to realize that our expectations are not always met. Sometimes, our loved ones may even demand more than they give, leaving us feeling used or disillusioned. Ecclesiastes 2:11 highlights Solomon's sentiment: *"Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done and on the labor in which I had toiled; and indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind."* Despite his wealth and achievements, Solomon found them lacking in providing lasting happiness. However, true happin...

Knowing God Loves Me

Image
*KNOWING GOD LOVES ME .*   _Psalm 103, uncovers and reminds us of God's endearing love from one of the Old Testament's most stirring passages._  Some years ago, a student in seminary class stood to his feet and announced to the professor, "I don't believe in God!" The professor, unraveled, replied, "Describe this God you don't believe in?" After the student had described an unlovely and vengeful God, the professor confessed, "I don't believe in that God either. My God is a God of love." I. *The description of God's love*  How do you describe a rose to a blind person? How do you describe Handle's Hallelujah Chorus to a deaf person? How do you describe the thrill of down hill skiing to one who has never walked? How do you describe the impeccable, infinite love of God to impure, finite humans? One of the most vivid characteristics of God is that he is a God of love. The Psalmist was descriptive in recording the love-nature of God...

The Power of Words: Blessings and Curses

Image
*_The Power of Words: Blessings and Curses_* The power of words is a theme woven throughout the Bible, showcasing the profound impact that godly individuals can have by pronouncing blessings or curses. As believers, we are called to be mindful of the authority our words carry and to align them with God's desire for us to be a blessing. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, *"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."* Our words have the potential to bring either life or death, blessings or curses. Let's explore instances from the Bible that illuminate this truth. *Pronouncing Blessings:* In Genesis 27, Isaac intended to bless his son Esau but mistakenly blessed Jacob instead. Despite the circumstances, the blessing spoken in faith prevailed. Genesis 27:28-29: *"Therefore may God give you of the dew of heaven, of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be mast...

There is No Salvation, Without Repentance

Image
*There is No Salvation, Without Repentance* “Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your loving kindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight” —Psalms 51 What Does God Require? In order for any person to obtain eternal life from God, the first and primary element that must be present in the heart, is genuine repentance.  Many people are sorry for their sins, yet not sorry enough to change their life and seek to sin no more. True repentance compels the sincere to not only experience genuine sorrow, but also a earnest desire to cease from their former sins. It is impossible to obtain salvation from Jesus, apart from a determined work of changing our previous behavior.  All sins are equal before God and a consistent, unrepentant...

Living in Humility: Resisting the Urge to Boast

Image
*_Living in Humility: Resisting the Urge to Boast_* Pride and arrogance are attitudes that the Bible warns against repeatedly. These behaviors are not only displeasing to God but can also harm our relationships with others. One form of such behavior is showing off, where we subtly or overtly boast about our achievements, possessions, or status to gain attention or admiration. Proverbs 16:18 tells us, *"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."* The act of showing off often arises from a heart filled with pride, seeking validation and recognition from others. However, this behavior distances us from God's grace and displeases Him. Even seemingly innocent displays of showing off, like inserting unnecessary details about personal possessions or achievements into conversations, can indicate a heart inclined towards pride. God desires humility, not self-exaltation. 1 John 2:16 reminds us that *"the pride of life is not of the Father but is of t...

Blessed to be a Blessing

Image
*_Blessed to be a Blessing_* We are immensely blessed by God in countless ways, each day being an opportunity to experience His grace and goodness. The book of Genesis reminds us of God's promise to Abraham: *"I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing."* (Genesis 12:2) God's intention in bestowing blessings upon us is not merely for our own benefit but also for us to become instruments of His love and blessings to others. He blesses us so that we may, in turn, be a source of blessing to those around us. The concept of being a channel of blessings is echoed throughout the Bible. 2 Corinthians 9:8 states, *"And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."* It underscores the idea that God empowers us not only to receive but also to give abundantly. When we share our blessings with others, we reflect the heart...

The Desires of God's Heart

Image
*The Desires Of God’s Heart*  Many people do not consider or know God’s heart and that He has desires. Often times we are too focused on our own wants and desires to consider God’s desires     we need to understand why it is important to know what God’s desires are. When we understand the desires of God’s heart, then we can begin to know Him more intimately. We will begin to see God for who He is really is. Then we will also begin to understand what God wants to accomplish in us and in the world & people’s lives around us.  We will see what God is doing in the world, and what His passion and mission and purpose is, and how we can join Him in His kingdom work and mission. Before we look at the first of God’s desires in His heart, you need to understand that God wants to (and needs to) touch and change our hearts, yours and mine. He wants to touch and change our hearts so that we will have the same heart and the same desires and interests and priorities...

Looking Back, Moving Forward: God's Unwavering Presence

Image
*_Looking Back, Moving Forward: God's Unwavering Presence_* Genesis 28:15 reassures us with these comforting words from the Lord: *"Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you."* This scripture echoes the truth that our sight and our faith have profound purposes in our journey with God. Our sight allows us to look back and see the faithfulness of God throughout our lives. Psalm 77:11-12 beautifully captures this sentiment: *"I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds."* As we reflect on our journey, we can clearly see the hand of God guiding, protecting, and providing for us, affirming His faithfulness. On the other hand, our faith enables us to look ahead with assurance and confidence in God's promises. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith: *...

Speech as a Reflection: Heart's Overflow

Image
*_Speech as a Reflection: Heart's Overflow_* Matthew 12:34 reminds us: *"Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."* This simple yet profound statement by Jesus holds a profound truth that tells us our speech reflects the state of our hearts. When people continually speak negative, cynical, or hurtful words, they unveil the contents of their hearts. Our speech pattern often serves as a revealing mirror reflecting the true nature of what resides within us. For Christians, our speech should reflect the presence of God in our lives. Ephesians 4:29 guides us: *"Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers."* Our words should bear the mark of kindness, encouragement, and grace, manifesting the transformation that God has worked within us. Conversely, those who have yet to embrace the love and truth of God might manifest a different speech pattern. Their words might refle...

Conquering Fear

Image
*_CONQUERING FEAR_* We all have different characteristics and qualities so it’s no surprise some people tend to be more fearful than others. Even still, there’s something we can all do to conquer our fears. There are different kinds of fear—and not all are bad. Children should be afraid of sharp knives and hot cooking surfaces in the kitchen because we don’t want little ones to get hurt. We should also be scared of poisonous snakes because they can cause serious injury or death. These fears are appropriate and a valuable part of our survival instinct. However, there are many fears which are not normal and hurt us. They cast a dark shadow over our lives and prevent us from living the life God intended for us. These fears paralyze us—hindering our ability to retreat from danger or move forward on safe paths. God doesn’t want us to live in fear because He repeats it many times in His Word. “Fear not” and “do not fear” appear throughout the Old and New Testaments. This is why the sec...

What is Repentance

Image
*What Is Repentance?*  Repentance is a major theme of the Bible and a requirement for sinful humans to approach the holy God. But what does repent mean?  Repentance involves a complete change of thought, attitude and action. It’s like making a U-turn in life. What does repentance mean? Repentance is a change of heart and change of direction. It involves a determination to stop sinning and not to sin in the future. Considering these definitions, what is repentance? It is looking at something that you did in the past, recognizing that it was sinful—that it broke God’s good and beneficial laws—and concluding you need to change for the better. The initial steps of repentance Since it is not natural for us to desire to make the changes necessary to obey God (Romans 8:7), He must lead us to understand the need for repentance (Romans 2:4), which is the starting point of a commitment to a new way of living and to the transformation of the human heart and mind from carnal to spi...

Denying Self

Image
*_Denying Self Luke 9:23 echoes a crucial truth: *"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me."* To truly follow Jesus, we must ultimately submit our desires to His will. Following Jesus entails a fundamental shift in our priorities. It means relinquishing our selfish desires and embracing His will. It might entail selling possessions, abandoning behaviors that conflict with His teachings, or engaging in actions that initially make us uncomfortable. It's about the end of our wants and the beginning of aligning our desires with what Jesus desires for us. Is it worth it, you might ask? Jesus Himself emphasizes the value of following Him by posing a thought-provoking question in Mark 8:36: *"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?"* While following Jesus might demand sacrifice, the eternal benefits far outweigh any earthly cost. Truly following Jesus means no long...

A Heart Cry for God's Renewal: Learning from David

Image
*_A Heart Cry for God's Renewal: Learning from David_* Psalm 141:3 captures David's earnest plea to the Lord: *"Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips."* In this Psalm, we witness not only David's plea for physical protection but also his sincere cry for a transformation within his heart. David didn't just seek God's protection from external threats; he sought a profound inner transformation. He called on God to intervene in the depths of his being, knowing that mere human effort could not safeguard his heart or guide his words. In his prayer, David acknowledged his vulnerability to sin and the inadequacy of his own strength. His plea was for God to purify his heart, guard his speech, and deliver him from the allure of evil desires. Psalm 51:10 echoes this sentiment: *"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."* David's reliance was not on his own resolve but on God's hea...

Requirements for Church Growth

Image
REQUIREMENTS FOR CHURCH GROWTH Acts 6:1-7 Every man God uses for church growth passed through the quarry of God. 1 Kg 6:7. At His quarry, He chisels out flesh and weight that easily beset man. Heb. 12:1. The church is not the building but the gathering of genuinely born-again children of God. In Acts 6:1&2, the apostles knew clearly what God called them to do.  > They were called to teach the word of God and to pray for the growth of the church.  > They were called to nurture brethren unto maturity to handle responsibilities. They knew that they were not called to serve the table. Many are serving the table today. The apostles were not intrusive in what God did not ask them to do.  > The church of God grows when everyone plays their roles as instructed by God. > The church of God grows when everyone is allowed to play their part as God instructed.  > The church of God grows when there is no root of bitterness among brethren. > The church ...

How To Forgive Someone

Image
*_HOW TO FORGIVE SOMEONE_* It’s natural to feel bitter or develop a grudge when you are hurt by someone. As bitterness builds inside of you, it’s usually followed by a swarm of other emotions—feelings of anger, resentment and rejection accompanied by a desire for revenge. Toxic emotions don’t change your situation or the person that hurt you. As you let them take over, they do change you, hurting you far more than the other person. And it doesn’t stop there. When bitterness and resentment take control, they can spill over and infect others who aren’t even involved. This is why the Bible refers to bitterness as poison. “Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many” (Hebrews 12:15). If you aren’t careful, it can hurt you and those close to you. Ask yourself: Do you like being around someone who is bitter or angry? The Bible goes a step further and explains why it’s important to forgive, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words,...

Consistent Christian Living

Image
*CONSISTENT CHRISTIAN LIVING*  “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58). TEXT: Genesis 5:22-24; 17:1 One of the negative end-time prophecies of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is that the love of many Christians shall wax cold.  Its fulfillment, as Christendom is presently witnessing, spells grave consequences. It is obvious now that many who were once zealous and committed to the Lord are losing their first love and enthusiasm with which they served God.  This is because the god of this world has enticed them with materialism into spiritual sleep and inertia, and sowed tares of discord, misfortune, and sickness into their lives. Manipulated by the enemy, these Christians lose their conviction as their fellowship with God and His people become irregular. They have consequently become unstable and unpredictable in char...

Heavenly Perspective: Embarrassing Joyful Worship Through It All

Image
*_Heavenly Perspective: Embracing Joyful Worship Through It All_* *"You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore."* ♡Psalm 16:11♡ This timeless truth invites us to anchor our joy in the enduring presence of our Heavenly Father. We often find ourselves fixating on temporary concerns—money, career, possessions. Yet, these will eventually fade away. As believers, we are reminded by Matthew 6:19-20: *"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal."* Our ultimate treasure lies in the eternal realm of God's presence. Philippians 4:4 echoes this sentiment: *"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say, rejoice!"* Here, the Apostle Paul encourages us to find our joy in the Lord, independent o...

Joseph's "But God" Faith: Confidence Beyond Human Limits

Image
*_Joseph's 'But God' Faith: Confidence Beyond Human Limits_* The word _'but'_ serves as an adversative, a bridge between contrasts, highlighting differences between right and wrong, good and evil, truth and error. It is a significant word, revealing the stark contrasts that permeate life. Genesis 50:20 illuminates this truth through Joseph's life: *"But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive."* Here, _"but God"_ marks the profound difference between human intentions and divine purpose. In Ephesians 2:4-5, the apostle Paul declares: *"But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ."* Here, _"but God"_ signifies the divine intervention that transforms spiritual death into life. Consider also Psalm 73:26: *"My flesh ...

Growing in Christlikeness

Image
*GROWING IN CHRISTLIKENESS*   *_Jesus Christ is coming soon_* ‼️ Whenever I ask a group of believers how they would like to grow spiritually, the answers usually range along these lines: I want to read the Bible more. I want to grow in prayer. I want to overcome this bad habit. I’d love to be a better witness at work. I want to start family devotions I want to help my church grow stronger. All these are good and noble goals to have.  But there are three larger canopies under which we could place each of these goals, which Scripture encourages us to aim at.  Reading the Bible more is not the end-game. I want to learn to read the Bible more because it will propel me toward these three larger targets.  Prayer is not the endgame. I know people who pray a lot, but they’ll get nowhere near these three areas, and so for them, their praying is largely wasted. These three primary goals for growth are 👉 Christlikeness, 👉 knowledge (the knowledge of God); and 👉 f...
