God is Almighty
This is an age-long question and in the quest to know
or have an answer to this question, rational beings have made several efforts
to know God. Such efforts have led men to different deities depending on their
locations and circumstances. ‘Rational beings’ in the sense that those who want
to put emotions aside and reason on the existence of God.
There is an the old story told of a child whose father
told him that God created all things including human beings but the child
retorted by asking the father: “who created God?”. This being inexplicable for
the natural man, the father dodged the question. And because the natural man
cannot provide an answer, many have become fools! The Psalmist said “The fool
hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done
abominable works, there is none that doeth good” Ps 14:1; 53:1.
In their further search for God, men resorted into
making idols – “Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They
have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: They have
ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands,
but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they
through their throat. They that make them are like unto them; so is every one
that trusteth them” – Ps 115:4-8. Hence, the Psalmist concluded: “For all the
gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens” Ps 96:5.
From time immemorial, the heart of man is always
seeking to know God, his creator and in this search, he looks around him and
sees a mighty rock, a mighty river with torrential moments, a mighty and
ageless tree, a big snake or terrifying animals etc., then he feels “this
should be god worthy of respect and worship”. But alas! Man is wrong! At other
times, he makes images that look like him – “They that make them are like unto
them; so is every one that trusteth in them” – Ps 115:8.
What an absurdity! What a depravity! What a
degradation! Or what else shall we call it when man resorts to seek his creator
in the created and deity in weak and beggary elements? – Gal 4:9 “But now,
after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to
the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?”.
The days of Jeremiah the prophet witnessed the
depravity and foolishness of men in their search for God. “For the customs of
the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the works of the
hands of the workman with the axe” – Jer 10:3. To deify the workman’s art “They
deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers,
that it move not. They are upright as palm tree, but speak not: they must needs
be borne, because they cannot go.” Jer 10:4&5.
It is very sad that men can descend so low that they
make a graven image which profits them nothing, forming them into gods or
molten images. Man became debased, shameless, and ridiculous in making
delectable things that are the work of workmen produced by the smith with tongs
and hammers as their God. Their carpenters stretched out his rule and line and
made a figure of a man according to the beauty of a man that it may remain in
his house – what a god! He hewed down cedars, oaks and cypress among the trees
of the forest. Cut part of it to make fire and the rest his god – Isa 44. Did this
form man or man formed this? If this is formed by man, it can therefore not be
god. As it was in the days of old, so it is now.
But who is God? All attempts made by men in this
regard remain in futility. The god that man formed cannot be God. God has never
left man in the dark as to who He is. By revelation and inspiration God has
made Himself known to men. By the mystery of the creation and the beauty of
created things, He made Himself known. “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel,
and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and
beside me there is no God. And who as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and
set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? And the things
that are coming and shall come, let them shew unto them” Isa 44:6-7. “Is there
a God besides me? There is no Rock: I know not any” v8.
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake
in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken
unto us by his Son, who he hath appointed heir of all things by whom also he
made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory; and the express image
of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power when he had by
himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high” Heb
2:1-3. God revealed Himself to men through prophets and the word – the Bible,
and more importantly through The Son – Jesus Christ.
Even the apostles having seen Jesus, wanted to know
God, the Father, “Lord show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied” but Jesus
told them “Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me? He who has
seen me has seen the Father; how can you say “Show us the Father?” Jn 14:8-9.
Would God have hidden Himself from the crown of His
creation – man? But because God is loving He makes Himself knowable. He made
the universe in all its magnitude and creative details. He brings us into a
relationship, so that we can get to know Him in a personal way, as we might a
close friend and this He does through His Son, Jesus Christ. He who knows
Christ, knows Him. God is welcoming, hence He invites us to talk to Him and
bring to Him what concerns us. God is forgiving. He will forgive us from the
moment we begin a relationship with Him. Jesus, the Son of God, paid for our
sins with his death on the cross. He rose from the dead and offers us
forgiveness. Halleluyah!
God is honest. Titus 2: “God is not men, that he
should lie, or a son of man that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not
do it. Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” “For all the promises of
God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us” – Num 23:19.
2 Cor 1:20. What he promises, can be counted on. When God promises us
forgiveness, eternal life, a relationship with himself, we can believe. God is
truthful, as emphasized by Jesus “Truly, truly I say unto you …” Every promise
he makes to us can be trusted, he means it so, we can take him at his word. God
is unlimited in wisdom, understanding and knowledge. He understands all the
elements of every situation including the history and future events related to
it.
Without any fear of contradiction, God is the “I am
that I am” Ex 3:14. He is the Ancient of Days – Dan 7:22. He is higher than the
highest – Eccl 5:8, He is the Eternal – Deut 3:27; the Immutable – Heb 1:12,
the Omnipresent, Acts 17:27, the Omniscient, Job 26:6, the Supreme Governor –
Ex 9:16; Ps 22:28 and the Omnipotent – Lk 1:35; Rev 19:6. We do not have to
update him, counsel him or persuade him to do the right thing. He will
definitely do the right because he is capable and his motives are pure. If we
trust him, he will never make mistakes or deceive us. He can be fully trusted
to do what is right in all circumstances, at all times.
