TEACHING OUR CHILDREN THE RIGHT VALUES
WHAT IS A VALUE: It is the acceptable norms in any
society. Values can be sub-divided into spiritual, physical, financial, moral,
health, and educational values.
The totality of
these makes a child to be acceptable and seen as coming from a good family. It
is therefore the duties of the parent to teach their children all of the above.
Spiritual Values:
-
Lead
them to know Christ.
-
Teach
and guide them to read the word of God.
-
Memorize
some of the Bible verses that might be handy for them in the day of trouble.
-
Teach
and help them to have a quiet time with the Lord every day.
-
Organise
family altar where they will learn more about God and express their feelings to
you.
-
Teach
them to fast as a means of having victory over difficult situation of life
Financial Values:
-
That
money is important but does not give absolute jo.
-
Teach
them to appreciate whatever gifts received for others evn when parents pays
their school fees or buy clothes for them
-
Teach
them to learn to save and not to spend everything.
-
In
whatever money received, teach them to pay tithes.
-
Teach
them to learn to give when there is a need in the house
Physical Values:
-
Identification
of their genders and expectations of the society e.g. Male to prostrate while
female knell down.
-
Male
to see themselves helping their sisters and to protect them.
-
Respect
to respect and value their female colleagues.
-
Teach
them food ethics – use of their hands. Fork and knifes, chewing in their mouth.
-
Greetings
and respects for the elderly ones.
-
Helping
in the house core – teach both the male and female children all the domestic
works including cooking and cleanliness of the house

Teach
them to wash their stocks, uniforms and polishing of their shoes.
Moral Values:
-
Respect
others regardless of their age.
-
Appreciate
people as they come in contact with them. When money or gift is giving, they
should let the parents know.

Teach
them the good aspect of our culture e.g. prostrating for boys or kneeling for
girls.
-
Make
yourself available so that when they are confused about what they see outside
their home, you will be able to teach them which one is right or wrong.

Watch
television or video with them.
-
As
soon as a child can talk, give them a separate room. Parent should lock their
doors and watch out for these children when they are fulfilling their conjugal
rights.
Health Values:
-
Wash
them properly and when they grow up teach them how to take care of themselves.
-
Washing
of hands before eating with the hands.
-
Cleaning
of teethes once or twice as the case may be.
-
Laying
of bed every morning.
-
Flushing
of toilets.
-
Feeding
them with balance-diet especially at their growing-up stage of life.
-
Don’t
be careless with a crawling or a child that is learning to walk.
-
Where
possible have a family doctor and give them regular check-up-eyes, teethes etc.
Educational Values:
-
Look
for a good school and be partners with the school.
-
Help
in teaching them how to read their books and write legitably.
-
Make
sure they do their assignment.
-
Pay
their school fees and other financial commitment on time.
-
Buy
necessary text books and other references.
-
Build-up
their courage and teach them that they can make it in life. Where a child is
not doing well, don’t condemn such a child, instead encourage him/her for
better performance.

Stimulate
them through both positive and negative stimulus.
-
Impose
discipline where necessary and remember Proverbs 20:6: “Train up a child in the
way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it” KJV.

Point
your kids in the right direction when they are old they won’t be lost Proverbs
22:15 “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child. The rod of correction
will drive it far from him” KJV
-
Young
people are prone to foolishness and fads; the cure comes through tough-minded
discipline.
Sports Values:
-
It
identifies and enhances the potentiality of a child.
-
It
makes a child healthy, wealthy and wise.
-
It
brings out the hidden talent and sports have become a way of life or a means of
achieving greatness.
-
Sport
is a profession on its own.
