THE MAN AS THE HEAD IN THE HOME – EPHESSIANS 5:20-26
“For the husband (man) is the head of the wife, even
as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their
own husbands in everything.”(vs 23 & 24).
The man was not made the head by himself but by the
Lord and to this end, the man also is subject to Christ in everything –
instruction, guidance, obedience, authority etc. He is therefore, expected to
match the headship with responsibility hence v 25.
He is to first and fore-most love the wife and by extension,
the children. He is to love, guide, guard, protect and encourage. He is to
provide for the Home to train and instruct. As the head in the home, the man
has to fulfil his roles in the following aspects:
1)
What type
of love?
Strong feeling of deep affection from the
man to the wife, children.
Affection – warm, gentle feeling of caring
for somebody.
2)
Guard
The action or duty of watching out for
attack, danger or surprise or protecting somebody. To be near somebody in order
to keep them safe from danger or from being harmed.
3)
Guide
– To direct somebody’s behaviour, to influence somebody.
4)
Leadership
– To show others the way.
5)
Encourage
– To give support confidence or hope to somebody. To help somebody to develop
or increase, to stimulate.
6)
Love –
Deuteronomy 6:5 (to God); Matthew 10:37; Revelation 2:4 (to Christ); Mark
12:31(to others).
7)
Instruct
– To give order/direction to somebody.
8)
Provide-
Financial – The Husband/Father/Head should go to any length – do extra jobs,
sacrifice his comfort to make the home financially sustainable. The head is
still the head no matter what! Timothy 5:8
9)
Train
– To give instruction, order/direction to somebody – Proverbs 22:6
