SERVING GOD WITH A GOOD CONSCIENCE

Introduction

Christianity can be summarized as relationship with God and with men. This was emphasized by Jesus when He came to the world to save sinners. In His message to the disciples in Mathew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before MEN, that they may see your good works, and glorify your FATHER which is in heaven.”(Capitals mine)

Our service and responsibility are primarily to God – our Father – and secondarily to men among who we live. It is one thing to serve; it is another thing to serve with a good conscience. A case in point is king Amaziah who did that which was right but not with a perfect heart. 2Chro. 25:2.

Therefore, in this study we shall look into what translates into Service to God and what good conscience means to us as believers.

1.What is Service?

This is defined as work done by somebody else as a job, duty…or favour, helpful action, a form of public worship, meeting public needs. Our Commission: “Go ye into the world…”Mt. 28:19-20, Mk. 16:15-16. This assignment is our Mission. God expects every believer to have both a ministry in the Body of Christ and a mission in the world. Your ministry is your service to people (believers & unbelievers). Being a Christian includes being sent into the world as a representative of Jesus Christ. As the father has sent me so sent I you – Jn. 20:21. The Mission Jesus had while He was on earth is now our Mission because we are the Body of Christ. This is our Service.

2. What is Conscience?

It is defined as “a person’s awareness of right and wrong with regard to his own thoughts and actions”. Jesus said: “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man…Mt. 15:19-20. All actions and reactions come from the heart before our deeds. In the Biblical sense our conscience is our heart. It is our motive. It is our loyalty. It is our sincerity of heart and purpose. The totality of us.

God wants all of you not a part of your life. He’s asking for all of your heart, soul and body. He is not interested in halfhearted commitment, partial obedience and the left over of your time and money. He desires your full devotion not little bits of your life.

3. What is a Good Conscience?

He who serves is a servant. As we serve the Lord, we are therefore, His servants. But it is important that we serve Him with a good conscience, otherwise, our service amounts to nothing. Paul said: “This being so, I myself always strive to have a conscience without offence toward God and Men.” Acts 24:16

  • A good conscience is one void of offence toward God and men. – Acts 24:16
  • Conscience purified by faith. 1Tim. 1:19, 3:9, 2Tim 1:3 – Pure
  • Undefiled – Tit. 1:15
  • Purged from dead works – Heb. 9:14
  • Loyal - 2 Chro. 25:2
  • Simple and sincere – 2Cor. 1:12
  • Purified by the Blood of Jesus – Heb.9:14,10:2,22

4. Conclusion:

In the Great Commission Jesus said: “Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you.” Mt. 28: 19-20 (CEV).

The Commission was given to every believer of Jesus, not to Pastors and Missionaries alone. It is not optional. If you are a part of God’s family your mission is mandatory. To ignore it would be disobedience. You are the only Christian some people will ever know and your Mission is to share Jesus with them. It may seem a big responsibility, it is a big honour to be used by God. Serving with a good conscience means a service void of eye service. Eph. 6:6, Col. 3:22. It is my prayer that your service will be reasonable and acceptable unto God. Rom. 12:1.
