DISCIPLINE IN CHILDREN

-         What is discipline?

1.     Discipline can be explained as the practice of training children to obey rules and orders and punishing them if they refuse to comply.

v It is also a method of training the mind and body of a person.

v It can be a means of controlling someone’s behavior.

v Punishment is part of discipline for something done.

 

2.     A) Discipline is of God and he established it.

v When God loves, He discipline. Heb 12:5-6.

v He disciplines us as sons. Deut 8:5

v Do not despise (refuse) God’s discipline. Prov 3:11-12.

 

B)     Discipline comes from man

v Parents

v Government

v Teachers

v Neighbours

v Elderly ones and so on

It is the responsibilities of both parents to discipline a child so that the type of a desired child will be produce. It is also necessary so that the child will not have any hiding place with either parent.

 

3.     Why do we discipline?

v God disciplines and trains His people to produce in them the qualities that conform to His desire in them. He disciplines sons. Heb 12:6-8.

v It is an act of love and mercy in God.

v Christian parent are admonished to emulate God in bringing up children in the discipline and admonition of the Lord. Eph 6:4.

v Christian should not rebel against discipline but rather see it as an act of love.

v Children when young cannot discern good from evil it is where you lead they will go.

v They grow up to do what adult do and say what they hear. They perceive the way you lead them to be the best.

v Children yields to training easily when discipline in them produces training and when it is done early.

v When children grow up well disciplined they hardly depart from it.

v Discipline brings correction.

v It is a command from God.

 

4.     How do we discipline?

v In love.

v Spare no rod early in life. Prov 13:24

v When there is hope and not to destroy him. Prov 19:18.

v Beat him with rod he will not die you shall deliver his soul from hell. Prov 23 verse 13 & 14.

v Give instruction always so that he will not stray from the word of knowledge. Prov 19:27.

v Rod and rebuke gives wisdom but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. Prov 29:15

v Correct your son and he will give you rest and delight to your soul. Prov 29:17.

v Let him grow with the word of God in his heart so that when he is old he will not depart from it. Ps 119:11.

v Prayer – Parent have the obligation to faithfully pray for their children just as God continued to work out the answers to David’s prayer for Solomon his son and Israel as whole after he was gone so too the impact of our prayers will outlive us. 1 Chronicle 29:19. We must receive the grace of God to succeed in child’s discipline.

 

5.     Result of Discipline in Children

The book of Proverbs is good for children as a study book. Make your children to love discipline so that they will be wise and have understanding. Prov 15:31 & 32.

v Disciplined children will fear the Lord and walk in the God’s instruction.

v Produce a blessed child.

v Brings gladness and rejoicing to parents. Prov 23:24-25; 10:1 & 15:20

 

6.     Children left undisciplined brings:

v Sorrow to the mother. Prov 10:1

v Despises the mother. Prov 15:20.

v Sorrow and no joy to the father. Prov 17:21.

v A grief to the father and bitterness to the mother. Prov 17:25

v Ruin to his father. Prov 19:13.

v Shame and reproach to parents. Prov 19:26.

v Premature death for the child. Prov 20:2; Ex 20:12

 

Finally parents who discipline on time with wisdom and the grace of God prepare for old age peace.
