OVERFLOWING
THANKFULNESS – COLOSSIANS 2:6-7
“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord,
so walk ye in him. Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as
ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving”. To abound with
thanksgiving means overflowing thankfulness. It is God’s expectation that
believers are full in giving thanks hence He said “In everything, give thanks
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians
5:18. Anyone who will show-case the will of God must be someone who is full of
thanks. It is commonly believed that only when things go well that people give
thanks. The scripture is replete with situations and circumstances that seem
unpleasant yet thanks were given to God.
In John 11:41 “…An Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said,
Father, I thank thee that thou has heard me.” The Psalmist, he was an epitome
of gratitude no matter the circumstances even when he saw the wicked prosper –
Psalm 73. In the same vein, Paul writing by the inspiration of the Spirit,
wrote to the Ephesians – “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the
Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” – Ephesians 5:20. To the
Philippians, he has this to say: “Be careful for nothing, but in everything by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto
God” – Philippians 4:6. In other words, even prayer is incomplete without
giving thanks. And to the Colossians: “Continue in prayer, and watch in the
same with thanksgiving” – Colossians 4:2.
Above all, our Lord Jesus Christ exemplified the act
of thanksgiving at the most unusual and odd time and even against the
background of a sorrowful situation when He prayed at the grave of Lazarus. It
was a groaning period – John 11:38 yet He said “…I thank thee that thou has
heard me. And I know that thou hearest me always…” John 11:41-42. Since we know
that He will always answer us, let us continue to give thanks even when the
answer to our prayer is yet to be received.
The more we give thanks the better and the healthier
we are. Why not start today to cultivate the attitude of thanks? It is a divine
attitude!
