THE ANOINTING

THE ANOINTING

Introduction:

Generally, anointing is the ritual act of pouring aromatic oil over a person’s head or entire body. By extension, the term is also applied to related acts of sprinkling, dousing, or smearing a person or object with any perfumed oil, milk, butter or other fat. The tradition of anointing the king originated in the Middle East. Based on Old Testament writings, the ceremony symbolized that the king was God’s chosen representative on earth. Historically, consecrated oil was applied to the temples, forehead, breast and wrists of the sovereign to be crowned.

Widely common and accepted is the pouring of oil on people’s head/forehead. And so many have limited and restricted themselves to the symbolic anointing by oil which in most cases is done or performed by a priest.

In several places in the Bible, anointing was done with oil. Such are of Aaron and his sons as priests, Lev 6:20; 8:10-12; 10:7. Saul as king, 1 Sam 10:1. David, 1 Sam 16:13, spirit of the Lord on David,  Solomon, 1 Kgs 13:34; Elisha, 1 Kgs 19:16; 15-21 Note that three people were anointed for great accomplishments Jehu, 2 Kgs 9; Joash, 2 Kgs 11:12; Heb 9:21-22, sprinkling of blood. The sick, Jas 5:14. By far above the anointing by oil is the anointing by Holy Spirit as in 2 Cor 1:21; 1 Jn 2:20; Act 10:38.

What does the Anointing do?

-         It breaks the yokes – Isa 10:27. (all kinds of yokes – of barrenness, sickness, disease, backwardness, failures etc)

-         It makes accomplishments easy – anointing of ease

-         It transforms and gives excellent performance in ministry – Acts 10:38.

-         It promotes far above others – Ps 45; Heb 1:9.

-         It gives inspiration – David played music for Saul. 1 Sam 16:14-23

Many of us believers have become born again for years, yet still finding it difficult to accomplish in many areas of our lives. Today, By the Anointing Yokes shall be broken.

v Paul was anointed by the Lord through Ananias by the laying on of hands. The anointing upon him made his handkerchief to heal people. Acts 19:2. Peter’s shadow had the ability to heal. Acts 5:15.

v In the present dispensation, our is more than anointing with oil but triple anointing – We are anointed by Christ, who is anointed by God and Holy Spirit: we  manifest the power – Col 3:3. Thus, we are complete in Him! Col 2:10. How was Jesus anointed Mt 3:16, 17. You are anointed for a particular ministry! Isa 61, Lk 4.
