Guided by the Word: Discerning Spiritual Experience

*_Guided by the Word: Discerning Spiritual Experiences_*

We may encounter various spiritual experiences that touch our hearts and minds profoundly. These encounters can be deeply moving and even awe-inspiring, leaving us with a sense of the divine. However, it's crucial to remember that our spiritual experiences should never be the lens through which we interpret God's Word. Instead, it is God's Word that should be the foundation for discerning the authenticity and origin of our spiritual encounters.

The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God's Word is the ultimate standard of truth: *"To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them"* (Isaiah 8:20). Every spiritual experience we have should align with the principles and teachings found in Scripture. God's Word acts as our compass, helping us navigate the sometimes intricate landscapes of spiritual encounters.

The Apostle Paul warned the Corinthians about the subtlety of deception, reminding them that *even Satan can appear as an angel of light* (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). This underscores the importance of being grounded in the Word of God, as it equips us with discernment to distinguish between genuine spiritual experiences and deceptive influences.

When we rely solely on our feelings or experiences to guide our understanding of God, we risk being misled. However, when we use God's Word as the ultimate authority, we are fortified against spiritual confusion and deception. The Psalmist understood the significance of God's Word in discernment, proclaiming, *"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path"* (Psalm 119:105).

To sum it up, while spiritual experiences can be powerful and moving, they should never overshadow or replace the authority of God's Word in our lives. Let us anchor our discernment in the unchanging truth of Scripture. By allowing God's Word to define and shape our spiritual encounters, we ensure that we are walking in the light and truth of His wisdom.
