In the journey of faith, we often encounter situations that require strength, wisdom, and strategic planning. While our abilities are gifts from God, there is a fine line between relying on them and relying on God. The story of Joshua's attempt to conquer the city of Ai, as found in Joshua 7, serves as a powerful lesson about the consequences of trusting in our own strength rather than seeking God first.

The narrative begins with Joshua's confidence in taking on Ai, a smaller city compared to the previous conquest of Jericho. However, instead of seeking God's guidance, Joshua and his men relied solely on their assessment and strength. Joshua 7:3 reveals the outcome: *"And they returned to Joshua and said to him, 'Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few.'"*

Trusting in their own judgment, they sent only a portion of their forces to conquer Ai, believing it would be an easy victory. However, the result was catastrophic. The men of Ai drove them back, causing Israel to flee in defeat. This unexpected failure left Joshua bewildered and distressed.

Joshua's response to this defeat reveals a crucial lesson. Instead of seeking God's will and guidance, he tore his clothes and fell on his face before the ark of the Lord. Joshua 7:6-9 captures his lament: *"Then Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord GOD, why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan! O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies? For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?'"*

In response to Joshua's plea, God reveals the root cause of their defeat: the sin of Achan, who took devoted things from Jericho against God's command. Joshua 7:11 records God's words: *"'Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.'"*

The story of Joshua and the city of Ai underscores the importance of seeking God's guidance and wisdom in every situation. It teaches us that relying on our own strength and assessment can lead to failure and disappointment. Just as Joshua learned, our trust should not be in our abilities alone, but in the Lord who leads us, empowers us, and guides us according to His perfect will.

In our own lives, when facing challenges, decisions, and battles, let us remember Joshua's lesson. Let us seek God in prayer, inquire for His guidance, and humbly acknowledge our need for His wisdom. As we do so, we will experience victory, not by our might, but by the power of the Almighty who fights for us.
