The Deeper Meaning of Being Lifted Up: Jesus' Sacrifice and Redemption

*_The Deeper Meaning of Being Lifted Up: Jesus' Sacrifice and Redemption_*

Isaiah 52:13

"Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently; *He shall be* exalted and *extolled* and be very *high*."

In Isaiah 52:13, the word *extolled* is synonymous with _"lifted up"_.This same term holds great significance in the New Testament, where Jesus Himself used it to convey a profound truth. In John 12:32, Jesus told His disciples, *"And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself."*

This statement by Jesus goes beyond a mere exhortation to praise Him. It is rooted in the impending sacrifice He would make on the cross, where He would be physically lifted up for the salvation of humanity. The context of Jesus' words indicates His reference to the crucifixion, *"if I am lifted up,"* signifying His ultimate act of love and redemption.

Misinterpretation of this passage has led some to believe that merely elevating the name of Jesus in praise or worship will automatically draw people to Him. However, such an interpretation overlooks the deeper truth that Jesus was foretelling His sacrificial death on the cross, where He would be literally lifted up.

The connection between Jesus' words and the cross is emphasized by the following verse, John 12:33, which clarifies, *"This He said, signifying by what death He would die."* Jesus was not solely referring to exaltation in worship but to His impending crucifixion as the means through which He would draw all people to Himself.

In light of this, let us appreciate the profound depth of Jesus' words. His declaration points to the central event of human history—the crucifixion—which remains the ultimate expression of His love and the means by which He reconciled us to God. As we exalt His name, may we remember the true context of His declaration and the sacrifice that brought us salvation.
