Deny Yourself And Follow Christ: A Counter-Cultural Call

*_Deny Yourself and Follow Christ: A Counter-Cultural Call_*

The call to follow Jesus is both profound and counter-cultural. It is a call to self-denial, not self-affirmation. In a world that often promotes self-love, self-value, and the pursuit of personal happiness above all else, the teachings of Christ present us with a different path—one marked by self-sacrifice and humility.

Matthew 16:24 records Jesus' words: *"Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.'"* This statement lays the foundation of what it truly means to be a disciple of Christ. It involves denying our own desires, ambitions, and self-centeredness.

Contrary to the popular notion of prioritizing self-value and self-esteem, Jesus teaches us the importance of esteeming others above ourselves. Philippians 2:3-4 admonishes us: *"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests but also for the interests of others."* This selflessness is a hallmark of Christlikeness.

Moreover, the Bible discourages a mindset that views ourselves as more valuable than others or that we have the right to leave any situation simply because it doesn't cater to our preferences. Galatians 6:3 warns against such thinking: *"For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself."* This verse calls us to humility and a realistic view of ourselves in relation to others.

Jesus Himself exemplified the essence of self-denial in His earthly ministry. Philippians 2:7-8 describes His humility: *"but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross."* Christ's ultimate sacrifice on the cross demonstrated the perfect example of self-denial for the sake of God's will and the salvation of humanity.

May we resist the cultural pressures of self-centeredness and instead embrace the path of self-denial as we seek to become true disciples of Christ. In losing ourselves for His sake, we ultimately find the abundant and eternal life He promises.
