Following Christ Above All Else
*_Following Christ Above All Else_*
In Matthew 8:21-22, Jesus encounters a scribe who expresses his desire to follow Him but with a condition. He says, *"Lord, let me first go and bury my father."* To which Jesus responds, *"Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead."**
This interaction illustrates a crucial lesson about commitment. The scribe was hesitant, possibly using the duty of burying his father as an excuse to delay following Jesus. Jesus, in His wisdom, saw beyond the surface and recognized the lack of genuine commitment in the scribe's response.
Have you ever delayed your commitment to Christ because of obligations or expectations from family or cultural norms? Are there situations where you hold back from fully surrendering to Jesus due to fear of familial disapproval?
Jesus' response highlights the priority of following Him above all else. It's not that Jesus is dismissing the importance of honoring one's parents or fulfilling responsibilities. Rather, He's emphasizing that the call to follow Him is urgent and demands our immediate response.
Matthew 10:37 underscores this reality: *"He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me."* Jesus challenges us to put our allegiance to Him above even our closest relationships.
The call to follow Jesus isn't one that can be postponed. It demands our full devotion, even if it means letting go of familial expectations or traditions that hinder our commitment to Him. Jesus desires wholehearted dedication, not delayed or conditional commitments.
Let's reflect on our own lives. Are there areas where we've hesitated in our commitment to Christ due to external pressures or concerns? Jesus calls us to prioritize our relationship with Him above all else, even if it means going against cultural or familial norms.
May we respond to Jesus' call with unwavering devotion and immediate obedience, placing Him above any other attachment or obligation in our lives.
