Raising Children To Reach Their God Intended Potential

"RAISING CHILDREN TO REACH THEIR GOD-INTENDED POTENTIAL".

We all want our children to reach their full potential, but this is only possible as we follow God’s plan. We need to see our children as the treasures and blessings they are and love them unconditionally. They need to be given to the Lord to fulfill His purpose for them. We need to give them a solid foundation on which to build their lives. That foundation is in teaching our children to obey the teachings in God’s Word and fear the Lord. We also need to mentor them in the knowledge of God and arrange opportunities for them to serve in a ministry suitable to their knowledge and maturity.

Ephesians 6:4(ESV)

4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Matthew 7:24(ESV)

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

The children of Israel were commanded by God to teach their children to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, strength, and mind. (Exodus 20:2-17; Matthew 22:37-39)

They were to teach their children to obey God’s commands.

Deuteronomy 12:28(ESV)

Be careful to obey all these words that I command you, that it may go well with you and with your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

They were to teach their children to trust in God’s protection and provision.

Psalm 9:10(ESV)

And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

This training began at the time they were born and held in the arms of their mothers as they celebrated each sabbath meal. Stories of God’s faithfulness were shared daily from generation to generation as a way of life.

Deuteronomy 28:1-14 gives a long list of blessings for those who obey and fear the Lord. These blessings would be spoken over the children repeatedly.  The rest of the chapter gives a long list of curses if the people disobeyed and rebelled against the Lord their God. This was to instill in the children “the fear of the Lord” so that God would bless them.

Deuteronomy 11:18-19(NIV)

Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds…Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

They also regularly blessed their children with the priestly blessing. I believe that this weekly blessing is part of the reason the country of Israel has an abundance of top doctors, inventors, and leaders in the business world today. (Numbers 6:22-27(NLT))

As a result of early instruction to love and fear the Lord, obey His commands and trust in His protection, Hebrew children were impowered to become great leaders of God’s people.
