Emotions and Faith: Exercising Self-control Through Scripture
*_Emotions and Faith: Exercising Self-Control Through Scripture_*
We often grapple with emotions and feelings that can influence our actions and thoughts. *While emotions are a part of our human experience, we must remember that they should not be the primary driver of our decisions.* Truth, as revealed in God's Word, should hold that role. We are called to exercise self-control over our emotions and align our lives with God's Word.
John 8:32 reminds us: *"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."* The truth that sets us free comes from God's Word, not from our ever-changing feelings. Emotions can be fleeting and unreliable, while God's truth is unchanging and a solid foundation on which to base our actions and thoughts.
2 Timothy 1:7 underscores the importance of self-control: *"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."* Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit that empowers us to manage our emotions and thoughts in alignment with God's Word.
Proverbs 25:28 provides wise counsel: *"Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls."* When we let our feelings dictate our actions and thoughts, we become vulnerable, like a city without walls. It is only through self-control and the truth of God's Word that we can build strong defenses against any ungodly influence that comes from our emotions.
James 1:19-20 advises: *"So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God."* Reacting to our emotions without self-control can lead to unrighteousness. Instead, we should be swift to hear God's Word, slow to speak in haste, and slow to give in to anger.
*We should recognize that feelings are part of our human experience but should not control our actions and thoughts.* Instead, we must rely on the unchanging truth found in God's Word. Self-control, a fruit of the Spirit, empowers us to align our lives with the wisdom and guidance of Scripture.
May we continually seek the truth of God's Word to guide our actions and thoughts, and may we exercise self-control over our emotions, allowing the fruit of the Spirit to flourish in our lives.
