The Danger of a Defiant Spirit: Examining Christian Conduct
*_The Danger of a Defiant Spirit: Examining Christian Conduct_*
It is essential to recognize and guard against the spirit of contention and defiance that can creep into our lives, even among those who claim to be Christians. Through the Scriptures, we can understand the characteristics of such behavior, as well as the consequences of embracing it.
The spirit of contention and defiance often manifests in individuals who desire to do things their own way, disregarding any form of authority. *"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."* (Pro 16:18). Pride leads to defiance, as individuals become resistant to correction and guidance.
These individuals may claim to be Christians, yet their actions betray a desire to follow their own will rather than submit to God's authority. *"But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic."* (James 3:14-15. True Christianity is characterized by humility and obedience, not self-seeking and defiance.
Examples of this spirit of contention and defiance include speaking ill of others, playing the victim when confronted, making excuses for sinful behavior, and using false doctrine to justify wrongdoing. *"Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law."* (James 4:11). Such behavior is contrary to the teachings of Christ, who calls us to love one another and walk in righteousness.
God detests the spirit of contention and defiance, as it leads to division and destruction within His body. *"These six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren."* (Pro 6:16-19). As Christians, we are called to humble ourselves before God and submit to His authority, resisting the temptation to follow our own will.
Let us guard against the spirit of contention and defiance, embracing humility and obedience in our walk with Christ. May we reject the prideful attitudes and self-seeking behaviors that lead to division and strife, and instead, strive to live in accordance with God's Word and His will.
