Stubborn Stairs: How God Cleanses Our Sin
*_Stubborn Stains: How God Cleanses Our Sin_*
Everyone who has ever done laundry knows how stubborn some dirt can be. You treat it, soak it, scrub it, and rewash it, but nothing seems to take out the stain. Some dirt is just too ingrained, too deep to be removed by our efforts alone.
But dirt comes in more forms than just the physical. We often talk about having "dirt in our past" and try to avoid "airing our dirty laundry." These phrases capture the reality that, like stained clothes, the dirt in our lives—our sins, regrets, and guilt—can be tough to remove. No matter how much we try to cleanse ourselves through our actions or good deeds, the stain remains. This is why God, in His infinite wisdom, gave Zechariah a vision of Jeshua, the high priest, standing in dirty clothes. This vivid image in Zechariah 3:2-4 is a powerful illustration of God’s mercy and forgiveness.
In Zechariah’s vision, Satan stands ready to accuse Jeshua of his sins. *"And the Lord said to Satan, 'The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?'"* (Zechariah 3:2). Jeshua stands there in filthy clothes, unable to deny the accusations because they are true. But God, in His mercy, rebukes Satan’s accusations and declares Jeshua innocent. *"Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, 'Take away the filthy garments from him.' And to him He said, 'See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.'"* (Zec 3:4).
God’s action in removing Jeshua’s filthy clothes and replacing them with fine, new garments symbolizes His mercy toward us. Just as Jeshua couldn’t cleanse himself, we too cannot cleanse our own sins. God’s mercy is unearned and undeserved; it is freely given because of His tremendous love for us. He removes the filthy garments of our sin and clothes us in His righteousness and holiness, giving us a new identity and a fresh start.
Whenever you feel dirty and unworthy because of your past or present sins, remember that God offers a way to be cleansed. *"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."* (1 John 1:9). God alone has the power to remove the stains of our sin and guilt, replacing them with a clean conscience and a pure heart.
Instead of trying to hide our “dirty laundry” or attempting to clean it on our own, we should turn to God. His grace is sufficient to cover all our sins and make us new. Embrace His forgiveness, trust in His mercy, and allow Him to clothe you in His righteousness today.
