Pride Before the Fall: A Call to Humility
*_Pride Before the Fall: A Call to Humility_*
Pride and arrogance are deeply offensive to God. They reveal how little we truly understand about His sovereignty and grace. *"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate"* (Pro 8:13). When we are filled with pride, we fail to acknowledge that everything we have; our wealth, talents, education, and even our very breath—belongs to God.
Some may take pride in their social status, feeling superior to others because of their position in society. Others may boast of their wealth, believing that their material success is solely the result of their own efforts. Still, others may take pride in their education or qualifications, thinking their intellect sets them apart. Even something as seemingly trivial as pride in one's driving skills can become a source of arrogance. These attitudes are all rooted in a deep misunderstanding: we own nothing, and everything we have is only by the grace of God.
In Deuteronomy 8:17-18, God warned the Israelites about this very attitude: *"Then you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.’ And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth."* We are nothing without Him. Every good thing in our lives comes from His hand, and it is only His patience and mercy that restrain Him from breaking the pride and arrogance we hold onto so tightly.
God seeks a humble heart, especially in those who claim to be His children. *"For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist, says the Lord. But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word"* (Isaiah 66:2). Humility is recognizing that we are utterly dependent on God, that without Him, we can do nothing.
If we continue in our pride, we risk God removing the very things we boast about. He can easily take away our wealth, our status, or our abilities to humble us. As it is written in James 4:6, *"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."* It is time to repent and lay down our pride before God.
Let us remember that pride comes before destruction (Pro 16:18). If we do not humble ourselves, God will do it for us. But if we turn to Him in humility, He will lift us up. *"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up"* (James 4:10). The time to repent is now.
