Living in Truth: A Higher Standard for Christians

*_Living in Truth: A Higher Standard for Christians_*

One day, a father found colorful pencil marks scribbled on the wall of his living room. Both Edward and Emma, his young children, were given clear instructions to use their color pencils only on drawing paper. Concerned, the father approached them and asked, "Who did this?" Both Edward and Emma firmly denied being the culprit.

The father, determined to uncover the truth, calmly told them, "I will check the security camera footage. If I find out who is lying, I will throw away the toys of the one who lied." Little Emma’s face turned pale as guilt washed over her. She hesitated for a moment but eventually whispered the word she was so unwilling to admit: "Sorry."

Emma’s moment of repentance was a small but powerful example of how truth will eventually come to light. While the situation ended with her apology, it also serves as a reminder of the dangers of allowing lies to take root in our lives.

Lying might seem like an easy way to avoid consequences, but it is far more destructive than we often realize. Lies not only hurt our relationships with others but also our relationship with God. Proverbs 12:22 reminds us, *“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.”* God hates lies because they are rooted in deceit, which opposes His very nature of truth and holiness.

When lying becomes a habit, it hardens our hearts and distances us from God. Satan, the father of lies, uses deception to trap us in sin and keep us from living in the freedom of God’s truth. Jesus warned us in John 8:44 that Satan is *“a liar and the father of it.”* As Christians, we are called to a higher standard of truthfulness that reflects the character of Christ.

God desires His children to live with integrity, reflecting His truth in all aspects of our lives. Colossians 3:9-10 exhorts us, *“Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”* Telling the truth, even when it is difficult, is a sign of our new life in Christ.

When we allow lies to take hold, we deceive not only others but also ourselves. Yet, God’s mercy calls us to repentance, just as Emma eventually admitted her wrongdoing. 1 John 1:9 promises, *“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”*

Let us examine our hearts and ensure that we are walking in truth. Are there areas where we have been dishonest with others or even with God? Remember, the truth will always come to light. As followers of Christ, let us reject the habit of lying and embrace the truth that sets us free. Living in truth not only honors God but also strengthens our relationships and character. Let your words and actions reflect the integrity of the One who is the way, the truth, and the life.
