"IN EVERTHING, GIVE THANKS"

“In All Things, Give Thanks”

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 — “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Introduction:
Thanksgiving is more than a holiday on the calendar; it is a posture of the heart. While our culture often reduces Thanksgiving to food, travel, and tradition, Scripture calls us to something deeper. God invites us into a life marked by gratitude—not situational gratitude, but spiritual gratitude that rises above circumstances.

The Apostle Paul wrote these words to believers enduring hardship, persecution, and uncertainty. Yet he said, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” Not because every circumstance is good, but because God is good in every circumstance.

1. Gratitude Is an Act of Trust:
A. To give thanks in all circumstances means we trust that God is present and active even when life is difficult.
B. Gratitude is not denial—it is faith in motion.
D. When we thank God in trials, we declare:  “Lord, I trust Your plan even when I can’t trace Your hand.”, "I believe Your promises more than my problems.”;  "I know You are working all things together for my good.”
E.Thanksgiving turns our eyes from what is missing to the One who never fails

2. Gratitude Reveals God’s Perspective:
A. When we pause to thank God, our vision changes.
B.We begin to see God's fingerprints in our daily lives
C.Gratitude is spiritual eyesight. It lets us see what God has been doing all along.

3. Gratitude Cultivates Joy:
A. Paul begins with the command: “Rejoice always.”
B. Joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness depends on what happens. Joy depends on Who we belong to.
C. A grateful heart is fertile soil where joy grows.
D. When we remember God’s goodness, joy takes root even in seasons of sorrow.
E. Gratitude does not remove all pain, but it transforms pain by reminding us that God walks with us through it.

4. Gratitude Is a Witness to the World:
A. In a world filled with complaining, anxiety, and division, a thankful Christian shines.
B. A heart that praises God in good times and in hard times becomes a testimony to the world.
C. People notice when believers maintain hope, peace, and gratitude during storms.
D. Our thanksgiving points others to the One who sustains us.

5. The Greatest Reason for Thanksgiving: Jesus Christ:
A. Salvation in Christ
B. Forgiveness of our sins
C. Peace of God
D. Promise of Eternal life
F.  Christ our Shepherd who never leaves us
G. God's loving kindness
H. God's provision
G. For everything: Even if every earthly blessing were stripped away, Jesus would still be enough for our thanksgiving.

Conclusion:
As we gather to offer thanksgiving, as we remember blessings past and present, may we hear Paul’s simple yet profound invitation:

“Give thanks in all circumstances.”

Let this Thanksgiving be more than a day—let it be a lifestyle.
May gratitude shape our words, our worship, and our witness.
And may we continually lift our hearts to the God who has given us more than we could ever deserve.

Closing Prayer:
“Lord, we thank You today for Your goodness, Your mercy, and Your unending love. Teach us to have grateful hearts—not only when blessings are obvious, but even in the quiet, difficult, and uncertain moments. Help us trust You, follow You, and praise You in all circumstances. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
