Developing a Culture of Discipleship in Ministry
DEVELOPING A CULTURE OF DISCIPLESHIP IN MINISTRY
TEXT: MATTHEW 28:19-20 MARK 16:15-16
INTRODUCTION
This is a wake-up call and a lovely reminder for ministers to focus more on the very essence of our calling which is: *TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS* (Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15-16).
It's time to shift from mere activities to intentional and local discipleship-making. Additionally, to invest in people by teaching them God's Word and empowering them to rise from disciples to disciplers, thereby spreading the Gospel globally.
The world needs authentic followers of Jesus, so let's rise to this challenge!
THE ESSENCE OF DISCIPLESHIP
The core essence of discipleship is following Jesus Christ and becoming like Him. It's about surrendering to His lordship, learning from His teachings, and living out His ways. In Mark 8:34, Jesus says, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." It's all about loyalty, obedience, and transformation. *NOTE: this should be the focus of every discipler (minister)*
Patterns for discipleship
Discipleship is categorised into two pattern or Nature.
1.The elementary nature of discipleship: This is the method of reaching out to people who are yet to hear or know about Jesus. (I.e People who have no knowledge of Christ)
2. The advanced method of discipleship: This is the method of transforming those who have already confessed Christ with the right knowledge and sound teaching of the scriptures, to have more disciplers in the ministry. Matthew 28:20.
"NEXT IS" RESPONDING TO THE
"Why"
"How" and
"Who"
Challenge
1. "Why"must we build the culture of discipleship in our ministries?
I. To transform their belief system.
ii. To transform them from common disciples to disciplers
ii. To transform their mentality into the love and fear of God, Psalms 33:9, those who fear him lack nothing.
2. "HOW" DO WE BUILD A FORMIDABLE CULTURE OF DISCIPLESHIP IN OUR ministries?
By way of Patience, continuous sacrifices and constant mentoring. Also through social media, outreaches and live evangelism.
3. "WHO" DO WE BUILD AND CARRY OUT THIS MANDATE ON?
The mandate of discipleship is carried out on people who are willing, ready, believe, and confess Christ.
*Note* The fact that we are called to serve with patience and perseverance doesn't mean we should be foolish. Only those who are willing are to be doscipled Matthew 10:14
*And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet*
Finally, three things affecting good discipleship today.
1. Wrong Environment
2. Wrong teaching
3. Wrong Experience
therefore if we must achieve good discipleship in our various ministries we must work on every negative influence in the lives of our disciples and balance it with the right teachings of God's word
