Looking Unto Jesus (Hebrews 12:2)


Introduction:

The Christian life is a journey of faith, and its success depends on keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ. The phrase "Looking Unto Jesus" means trusting Him completely, following His example, and depending on His strength in every situation. In a world filled with distractions, temptations, and challenges, believers are called to remain focused on Christ, who is the source of salvation, hope, and eternal life.


The Bible clearly encourages Christians to look to Jesus in every circumstance. Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) says, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." This verse reminds believers that Jesus began the work of faith in us and will bring it to completion if we continue to trust Him.


Looking unto Jesus means placing Him at the center of our lives. He is our perfect example of humility, obedience, love, and forgiveness. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus showed compassion to the poor, healed the sick, forgave sinners, and obeyed the will of the Father even unto death. Christians are called to imitate His character. As 1 Peter 2:21 (KJV) says, "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps."


Another important reason for looking unto Jesus is that He gives strength during trials. Every believer faces difficulties, but Christ has promised never to leave nor forsake His people. When Peter walked on the water, he remained safe as long as he focused on Jesus. However, when he looked at the wind and waves, he became afraid and began to sink. Matthew 14:29–30 (KJV) says, "And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me." This story teaches that when believers take their eyes off Christ, fear and doubt can overcome them.


Looking unto Jesus also brings peace and confidence. The world cannot provide lasting peace because it is full of uncertainty. Jesus alone gives true peace to those who trust in Him. John 14:27 (KJV) declares, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." When Christians focus on Christ rather than their problems, they experience courage, comfort, and hope.


Furthermore, looking unto Jesus strengthens believers to overcome sin and temptation. Jesus lived a sinless life and defeated Satan through obedience to God's Word. By relying on Him, Christians receive the grace and power needed to live holy lives. Philippians 4:13 (KJV) states, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." This reminds believers that victory over temptation comes not through human effort alone but through the strength that Christ provides.


Looking unto Jesus also means trusting Him for eternal salvation. Jesus is the only way to God and the only Savior of humanity. John 14:6 (KJV) says, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Those who believe in Him receive forgiveness of sins, the gift of eternal life, and the assurance of being with God forever.


Conclusion:

In conclusion, looking unto Jesus is essential for every Christian. He is the author and finisher of our faith, our perfect example, our source of strength, our giver of peace, and our Savior. No matter the challenges or distractions of life, believers must keep their eyes fixed on Christ through prayer, Bible study, obedience, and faithful living. As we continually look unto Jesus, our faith grows stronger, our lives become more Christlike, and we receive the hope of eternal glory. Therefore, every believer should make it a daily commitment to look unto Jesus in faith, trusting Him to guide, sustain, and lead them safely to His heavenly kingdom.
